    FAQs

Can I see a dietitian for gut health in Cape Town?

Yes. Maryke Gallagher, registered dietitian, consults at Expand Health in De Waterkant, Cape Town, and gut health is a core part of her work. For bloating, IBS, reflux and food sensitivities, she works with Dr Dan Blanckenberg on our gut health consultations.

What happens in the first consultation?

The first consultation is an assessment session during which the dietitian asks questions around medical and family history, lifestyle, sleep, exercise, medication use, supplements and nutritional intake. You will also be asked to bring results of any previous tests done (blood test, genetic test, allergy tests etc). If additional tests are needed this will be discussed during this session. A broad overview of basic nutritional needs and dietary changes or disease-specific nutritional interventions are discussed, as well as proposed interventions and dietary goals.

Why is the nutrition guide billed separately?

We take time to evaluate all the information gathered during the first session, as well as interpreting test results and compiling a personalised plan that takes your personal nutritional needs, lifestyle, lifestage, likes/dislikes and dietary habits into account. We then compile practical guidelines and tools to assist you in your personal health and nutrition journey.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your nutrition goals and needs. If you are seeing the dietitian for disease-specific nutrition guidance, your treatment programme will determine how often you need to consult. During follow-up consultations, progress is reviewed, goals evaluated, and your plan may be refined as your needs change.

Can I claim back from medical aid?

After your consultation, we will provide you with a statement that includes the procedure codes and ICD10 code to claim back from your medical aid. How much your medical aid will cover depends on your specific plan. Please contact your medical aid to find out how much they cover.
